Evan might have looked as if he felt bad, but appearances did nothing for reality. His right hand came up and caught Alex by the neck. He lifted the Witch into the air and Alex instinctively let go of Evan’s collar and tried prying the man’s hands from his throat. He couldn’t breathe or speak and his feet dangled above the ground.

“Don’t presume to know me, Detective Gardner,” Evan’s voice was a whisper in that hallway, but it reverberated in Alex’s head. “I am not your enemy, and I will protect Phinazee with my life.”

With that, Alex found himself on the floor, gasping for air. Evan leaned his back against the wall and put his hand to his face. “I’m sorry, detective. I—I wasn’t prepared for your attack. I responded…defensively.”

Alex continued coughing and pulling in air as he got to his feet and stood on the other side of the hall, facing Evan. After a few good, deep breaths, he said, “You say…you’ll protect her…with your life. So…how is it a little girl… stabbed her?” He coughed again and straightened. He could hear Noah, Rose and Gabby downstairs. “I could see the wound. That shirt’s not buttoned all the way up. It’s in the middle of her chest, Evan, where her heart should be—and the scar looks to be three weeks healed. That girl didn’t miss, did she? She sunk that knife into Phin’s chest. She should have died. But she’s there…alive. You care to enlighten me?”

Evan straightened and ran his long fingers though his tousled hair. “I am aware of your love for Phinazee—I can feel it. Even now. But do not mistake that I, too, care. As for what happened—it is as she said. That girl—Lily—attacked her. I got here in time to heal her. The Seed…attacked the Warden,” Evan looked at the floor and Alex could see real confusion on the man’s face.

“Why?”

“That’s the million dollar question, detective. Why? The Seed is meant to seek out the Sacred space and the Warden.” He held up his hands, indicating the house around them. “The Seed seeks their place for true birth…they don’t attack their keeper. That’s like…” he shook his head and finally focused on Alex. His face was lined in worry. “Attacking your mother.”

Alex rubbed at his face. “Are you sure that’s even it? Maybe there’s another Seed?”

“No…I can sense its presence. I mean,” Evan looked preoccupied with his thoughts. “She stabbed Phinazee. We’re all lucky she missed Phinazee’s heart but did slice through vital conduits. I saw it all through Pyewacket.”

“Shouldn’t she be in a hospital?”

“No—she’ll recover in a day or two. Leave Pyewacket with her. He’s doing what any good Familiar would do and continuing what I couldn’t…what I didn’t have the strength to finish…”

Alex had a knack for understanding innuendo and subtlety. He assumed the moment Evan got that call at the morgue, he’d rushed here. Ran, took a cab, flew, whatever the means, but he got here because he knew Phin was in trouble.
